Faceted search is becoming a contemporary and de facto search tool for content rich websites, in particular online stores and digital libraries. It is a resource discovery approach which has the propensities to enhance user experience. In this session, the constituents and case studies of faceted search user interface will be discussed and compared. Various associated open source software including Blacklight, VuFind and Apache Solr, will be introduced, along with the general techniques with which these products and faceted search may be developed.
The session will be presented by Boon Low, who has recently managed the JISC project 'Usability and Contemporary User Experience in Digital Libraries (UX2.0)', which underpins the digital library services for Enabling Grids for E-SciencE (EGEE), facilitating content for grid computing and e-science training purposes. The services are based on custom-built web applications and engineered systems from off-the-shelf and open source systems including Apache Solr faceted/enterprise search infrastructure, Blacklight faceted search UI (Ruby on Rails), and Fedora Repository (Java).
Bookings will be opened around one week before the event as usual, but for more details of Boon's work, you can read his blog 'Enhancing User Interactions in Digital Libraries'
