Librarians attending the Highlands Region Librarians’ Summer Gathering in Lithuania scattered for cover when the rain came down – except for the lucky people in Pasvalys Marius Katiliskis Public Library’s ‘Farmers’ Paradise’ tent.
This was the tent’s first appearance, but it will soon become a common sight at agricultural fairs and festivals. The tent is a vital piece of equipment in the library’s LIBR-A service, which uses smart phones to connect farmers to sources of agricultural information and support.
‘All year round the tent will travel to agricultural fairs and festivals in Lithuania. We have unpredictable and changeable weather here, with plenty of rain. The tent will ensure we are able to conduct training and events – no matter what the weather is like,’ said Ms Rita Bedulyte, manager of the LIBR-A service.
The librarians used the opportunity of the Summer Gathering to demonstrate the new service to other librarians and to launch the new Pasvalys agricultural website (www.pasvaliodirva.lt), which includes an online farm produce market.
The tent is already fully booked for the summer, and will travel to community gatherings in villages throughout the country. ‘Pusalotas Community Council has already asked me to book the tent for all upcoming open air festivities, including our most notable Pusalotas Fair,’ said Ms Veronika Masaliene, a librarian from the village of Pusalotas.
‘I often get sponsorship from our community when organizing events, and I’m happy that the library can repay the community back in new ways,’ she added.
